About the event:

-WALK-

The event will kick off with a morning 5K walk involving families, local businesses, walk teams and supporters. Participants will walk and raise funds on behalf of our 2011 Nonprofit Partners and Nonprofit Affiliates. The morning will be filled with music at Raley Field and along the route. After the walk, enjoy entertainment, interactive booths, kids activities, more music, food and fun! There is NO FEE to register for children 5 years of age and under. The registration fee for youth 17 years of age and under is $10 and $20 for adults 18 years of age and older. The registration fee for youth and adult participants includes a commemorative Walk ‘N Rock for Kids baseball cap.

Once you have registered, all funds raised will go directly to the children’s charity you register to walk in support of. To get started, just click “Register Here” above or scroll down and click on the logos or names of the benefiting nonprofits to visit their pages and learn more about them. You can join an existing walk team under the nonprofit you wish to support OR start your own team! If you do not have a nonprofit preference, you can walk under “Walk ‘N Rock for Kids” to support all seven of our 2011 Nonprofit Partners.

CASA Training Classes

Child Advocates of Placer County manages the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program and our new Adult to Youth Mentoring Program. We recruit and train community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children and/or mentor at-risk youth. CASA’s are court-appointed by a judge and work one-on-one with a foster child advocating on their behalf in juvenile court. A mentor works with youth to help prevent a child from entering the Juvenile Justice or Child Welfare systems. The ultimate goal of Child Advocates of Placer County is to recruit, train, and supervise volunteers to make a difference in the lives of youth whether they are with family or in out-of-home placements.

Become a CASA! There are about 370 abused and neglected kids each year going through Placer County Juvenile Dependency Court.

Become a MENTOR! There were approximately 196 youth who dropped out of high school in Placer County and over 4,000 were arrested. Help make a lifelong difference for these kids.

Volunteers are required to:

Attend one mandatory orientation session prior to training acceptance.
Pass a background check.
Be at least 21 years of age, have a good driving record and reliable transportation.
Complete 30-35 hours of training before becoming a sworn officer of the court.
Serve a minimum of one year and an average of 4 – 12 hours per month.
Complete 12 hours of continuing education over course of a year.

This is a great opportunity for active retirees, students and working professionals. Male volunteers and bilingual volunteers are especially encouraged to apply. There’s no prior legal or social work experience required, just the necessary desire and ability to work with these kids and the court system. Orientation sessions provide a general overview about the Programs and a brief introduction of the training topics.

Topics may include Advocacy and the Law, Court Process, Roles of the Attorney and the Social Worker, Cultural Awareness, and Developmental Stages/Behavioral Disorders of youth.

A2Y Mentors

Adult to Youth Mentors Serves At-Risk Youth
Launched in March 2010, our A2Y Mentors program is a partnership with the Placer County Office of Education (PCOE), and is part of a comprehensive system of support for at-risk youth in Placer County. The “upstream” intervention and prevention approach is meant to help these youth re-engage in school and their natural community support systems. We also assign a portion of our mentors to former foster youth (up to age 22) who have aged-out of the child welfare system without familial support. Our goal is to help these youth/young adults transition into life as successful and independent adults – a goal that often eludes former foster youth.
